| What Innovation-technological or otherwise- would make any city a substantially more liveable place? |
 |
| Sustainability Lessons |
Public transportation has to be a priority and include, for daily commuting, small, nonpolluting cars integrated into a "public transporation system," as Paris did with the Velib bicycle-sharing scheme. Second, people need to get involved with sustainability by using fewer cars, separating recycle gargabe at home, living close to work or working close to home, and teaching children about sustainability. Children are phenomenal agents of change.

A tale of many cities
But a great sustainable and livable city doesn’t emerge by accident and its development cannot be taken for granted. It requires hard work, cohesive planning and meticulous implementation. And high management skills. Perhaps the time has come to have an Indian Urban Service, a body of highly trained professionals who will manage the city. This could be akin to IAS, IFS, Revenue and Forest services. There’s also a need for a top-notch think-tank which develops policy and goals for urbanism, These should include the best people from various areas – town planning, urban designing, transport, energy, environment, public utilities, landscape, housing, etc. ...selengkapnya | |

| | selengkapnya |

 | Two Billion Cars: Driving Toward Sustainability [Oxford University Press, USA] Halaman : 336 Tahun :2010 Koleksi : | Today there are over a billion vehicles in the world, and within twenty years, the number will double, largely a consequence of China's and India's explosive growth. Given that greenhouse gases are already creating havoc with our climate and that violent conflict in unstable oil-rich nations is on the rise, will matters only get worse? Or are there hopeful signs that effective, realistic solutions can be found?
Blending a concise history of cars and their impact on the world, leading transportation experts Daniel Sperling and Deborah Gordon explain how we arrived at this state, and what we can do about it. Sperling and Gordon assign blame squarely where it belongs-on the auto-industry, short-sighted government policies, and consumers. They explore such solutions as getting beyond the gas-guzzler monoculture, re-inventing cars, searching for low-carbon fuels, and more. Promising advances in both transportation technology and fuel efficiency together with shifts in traveler behavior, they suggest, offer us a way out of our predicament.
The authors conclude that the two places that have the most troublesome emissions problems--California and China--are the most likely to become world leaders on these issues. Arnold Schwarzenegger's enlightened embrace of eco-friendly fuel policies, which he discusses in the foreword, and China's forthright recognition that it needs far-reaching environmental and energy policies, suggest that if they can tackle the issue effectively and honestly, then there really is reason for hope. Updated with a new afterword that sheds light on the profound changes in the global economy in the last year, Two Billion Cars makes the case for why and how we need to transform transportation now more than ever. |

| Welcome to the fifth annual Monocle survey on top 25 liveable cities around the world. For 2011, Monocle has approaced
the rating of the cities with three things: Opportunity, City's 24 hour metabolism, and Fine balance between old-fashioned preservation
and forward-thinking planning. |
 | Helsinki: A city that is genuinely and fundamentally bettering itself, this welldesigned capital in the north leaps up to number one for bravery alone. |
 | Zurich: Still the ideal place to live and work (and grab summertime swims in your lunch break), Zurich retains a spot in the top three. |
 | Copenhagen: Its ongoing commitment to being the world's greenest cities continues to gather momentum, despite Denmark's slight lurch to the right. |

Demikian pula pemilahan sampah. Di RW tersebut sudah ada bank sampah. Agar efisien, bak bak penampungan sampah kering diletakkan di setiap gang. Tampaknya, naluri wirausaha dimiliki warga. Heny memanfaatkan lahan kosong sebagai tempat budi daya jamur tiram. Produksi jamur tiramnya sudah banyak dijual. Jamur dipanen hampir setiap pagi dan sore. Menurut Heny, budi daya jamur tergolong mudah. ”Tentu butuh ketelatenan,” tuturnya. Bukan hanya itu. Pekarangan rumahnya menjadi pusat kegiatan warga. Mulai pembuatan daur ulang sampah pelepah pisang, pengolahan sampah basah, pembibitan
pohon pisang, hingga kolam lele. | | | Website : - | | Sumber : Jawapos, 2 Desember 2011 |
